Although the frame folds, buyers should not assume that every folding fat-tyre e-bike will be easy to carry. Check the complete bike weight and folded dimensions if you intend to lift it into a car or take it on public transport.

Its removable 48V 15Ah battery has a 720Wh listed capacity. The manufacturer claims approximately 48 km in electric mode and up to 84 km with pedal assistance under stated conditions. 

The motor is rated at 750W with a listed peak output of 1,000W. The Y16 also includes five assistance levels, mechanical disc brakes, front and rear lights and a maximum published load of 150 kg. 

Unlike the geared bikes elsewhere in this comparison, the Y16 uses a single-speed drivetrain. This keeps gear selection simple but provides less flexibility when pedalling across different gradients.

Which removable-battery electric bike should you choose? 

Start with how far you travel, where you can store the bike and how often you will need to lift it. 

Choose the Onesport OT02 Pro if you have a shorter journey and want one of the lighter folding options. Consider the Samebike CY20 if you want a folding commuter with a larger battery and longer listed range. 

The EMotorad Plymouth is the clearest city-focused option. Its step-through frame, full-size wheels, basket and rear carrier make it suitable for practical everyday journeys where compact folding is less important. 

The Engwe EP-2 Pro provides a folding frame, wider tyres and a larger listed range. The Vitilan U3 and Coswheel Y16 offer higher-powered configurations, but buyers should confirm the rules that apply to their intended use before purchasing. 

In Ireland, a pedal-assisted electric bicycle treated like a conventional bicycle has a maximum continuous rated output of 250W, with assistance cutting out before 25 km/h. Motor wattage alone does not confirm a bike’s legal classification, so check its complete configuration and the current Road Safety Authority guidance on e-bikes.

How should you charge a removable e-bike battery? 

Follow the instructions provided with your specific bicycle and battery. Use the approved charger, connect the battery in a dry and suitable location, and check that the battery, cable and charging port are undamaged before use. 

Do not use a battery that appears swollen, cracked, unusually hot or otherwise damaged. Stop charging and contact qualified support if you notice excessive heat, an unusual smell, smoke or unexpected noises.
